QBFP Noosa Boatshed Planning Report
patrols operating out of the facility play a primary role in protecting waterways, undertaking compliance monitoring
and maintaining fisheries resources in the Noosa district;
the height of the boatshed has been reduced to the greatest extent possible whilst achieving the necessary
structural building specifications and QBFP vessel requirements;
the QBFP building and vessel assets are managed through a cost-effective approach to ensure that the demands
generated by the QBFP and other cross-jurisdictional organisations can be met.
It is therefore requested that Noosa Shire Council, in assessing the subject development application, give weight to
planning policy embedded within the draft Noosa Plan.
Community expectations
The subject land has had a long history of use as a fisheries base and is appropriately sited on the Noosa River for
the storage of boat craft and to provide a base for fisheries patrols. Given the site’s history, the community can
reasonably expect that this use would continue to operate in this location.
Furthermore, in the context of technological advancements and changes in operational requirements, it is also a
reasonable expectation that further development would seek to upgrade previous boatsheds. The proposal seeks to
improve the existing boatshed to future-proof the facility and support the accommodation of larger and more
contemporary vessels of QBFP and other agencies. While the proposal is larger than the pre-2017 shed, the proposed
modifications will help to reduce the appearance of height, bulk and glare, and will help to integrate it into its coastal
setting.
To date there have been two rounds of community engagement to create awareness and transparency, and gain
feedback on the proposed development. A range of options, issues and opportunities have been raised by the
consulted community and the department have sought to address some of these key concerns through the
development of two design options for the facility.
