Table 3. Map reference numbers for key Biosphere attractions/experiences that can be accessible from a core Noosa
Biosphere Trail. Yellow shaded is subject to further investigation and discussions with land owners.
The Noosa Biosphere® Trail Concept Map includes the existing Hinterland Trail and a proposed new
Coastal Trail. The Hinterland Trail utilises the current Noosa Trail Network and is multi-use, providing
for horse-riders, mountain bikers, walkers and runners. The Coastal Trail, due to its proximity to more
developed areas, is predominantly dual use, providing for mountain bike riders, walkers and runners.
Single use trails branch off the core Noosa Biosphere® Trail. Examples of single use trails include
the Lake Macdonald and Noosa River canoe trails, coastal National Park walking trails and mountain
bike riding at Wooroi, Tewantin National Park. The canoe trail network with launching points is
subject to a separate feasibility assessment.
4. Trail standards
The current hinterland Noosa Trail Network utilises different trail surfaces such as dirt, grass, gravel
road, pavement and bitumen. Similarly, a broader trail network would utilise different trail surfaces
depending on existing infrastructure and user needs. There are Australian standards for the different
types of trail subject to predominant user groups and assessed difficulty ratings.
Subject to Council endorsement of the Noosa Biosphere® Trail Concept Map, consultants will be
able to develop an Implementation Plan to identify predominant user groups, preferred trail types,
investigate feasibility, priorities and capital and operational (i.e. whole of life) costs for both the
existing Noosa Trail Network and the broader Noosa Biosphere® Trail. Most of the trails identified
in the concept map are existing fire trails, recreation trails, pathways or roadways with little or no
new trail developments proposed.
