There are also a number of other events that utilise all or part of the trail network such as the Noosa
Enduro, the Noosa Strade Bianche bike event, King of the Mountain MTB event and the Kin Kin
Horse Ride. In addition a number of commercial operators offer tours and adventure activities. There
is a need to cater more broadly for these events, some of which are run over 100km in length and
extend from the coast to the hinterland and return.
6. Funding models
Another recommendation of the Noosa Trail Masterplan is to investigate funding models to manage
the trail network that crosses mostly Council land, but also National Park and private land. Council
currently budgets $120,000 per annum for the Noosa Trail Network (both labour and materials) but
this is insufficient to manage the current trail or an expanded one.
Funding models that are being explored include contributions from events and commercial
operations that use the trail. This needs further discussion with the stakeholder group and tour
operators to ensure that ultimately ratepayers are not left to wholly fund future investment in the trail
that will benefit commercial operators.
7. Trail 5 Upgrade Project
Council was successful in receiving $1.61m in State and Federal Funding to improve the Trail 5
Pomona to Cooran Trail. Map 2 on the following page is a project map for these works and shows:
• The Core Trail 5 which is subject to the upgrade
