SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 7 AUGUST 2018
Additional major waste management contracts let in 2017/18
Reviva
Noosa’s new and improved recycling and sales shop ‘Reviva’ opened for business on the 3rd of
July 2018. Mayor Tony Wellington was on hand to cut the ribbon.
New operator, Resource Recovery Australia (RRA) – a not-for-profit specialist waste and
recycling group – aims to increase recovery of items otherwise headed for Noosa’s landfill by
around five tonnes a month. They have already improved Council’s mattress recycling, with foam
now being recycled. RRA is also working in partnership with the University of NSW to create a
new product from the textile component of mattresses.
RRA’s Noosa team is looking forward to rolling out a wide range of new and improved services at
the shop. The team have already produced items made from recovered materials such as planter
boxes using parts of old refrigerators. Such innovative ideas are a taste of things to come.
Waste Officers are already hearing great reviews about the new shop with people commenting
on the enhanced presentation of goods and professionalism of staff. RRA have been an active
participant in the annual kerbside collection this year, collecting 3.24t of reusable material in 3
days.
Green waste processing
Tenders were called for a 3-year contract to process green waste and timber and the evaluation
process has just been completed by officers of the Waste Section. The report on the tender is
presented separately to this month’s round of Council meetings.
Public place bins
Additional public place bins have continued to be installed over the past year by the Waste
Section. This has included new recycling bins in Hastings Street, The Woods, Cooroy township,
Pomona township and Cooran township. Twenty new public place recycling bins were installed
across these areas.
The past year has also seen the removal of the last of the timber slat bins along Gympie Terrace,
all of these have now been upgraded to the new style enclosures. Council also upgraded the bin
enclosures at the Sunrise Beach shops to the new style enclosures.
Illegal dumping
Camera surveillance has continued with the 10 cameras continually deployed around the known
dumping hotspots. Cameras continue to be the most effective front line defence against illegal
dumping, providing reliable evidence of dumping activities. As occurred last year, the cameras
will be deployed around known trouble spots during the bulk kerbside collection.
In this period officers issued two show cause notices, eight clean up notices, two formal warnings
and seven PINs, with fines now totalling $9,333. Waste services staff also visited numerous
properties and informally negotiated a number of minor clean-ups.
Waste Education
Schools program
Recycling and waste education talks and workshops have been given to nine different schools
and kindies and three different community groups in Noosa over the last six months. Attendees
at these sessions totalled over 2,200.
