XOU . REQUIREMENTS RELATING TO WASTE
Corporate Plan Reference: Theme 1: The Noosa Environment
Theme 2: The Noosa Community
Endorsed by Council: <Insert Date of Ordinary Meeting >
Policy Author: Manager Waste and Environmental Health
POLICY BACKGROUND
Noosa Council provides standard general waste containers for domestic, commercial and industrial
waste. Council’s approved waste collection contractor collects over 50,000 waste containers every
week.
Most residents are very conscious of doing the right thing. However, Council does receive
complaints and Council Officers regularly observe instances where waste containers present a
public health, safety or amenity impact, such as:
e Risk to pedestrians when a bike rider weaves to avoid a waste container on or adjacent to a
bike path;
e Manoeuvring vehicles can be damaged while parking, particularly if they hit a metal bin;
e Conflicts between outdoor dining patrons and odour arising from adjacent waste containers left
on the footpath after servicing;
e Impacts on the amenity (look and feel) of Noosa as a high profile tourist destination.
The significant number of waste containers in Noosa Shire requires that Council:
e Clearly inform the public of their obligations regarding waste containers to avoid confusion;
e Ensure that presentation of waste containers for servicing complies with the Council’ obligations
under the waste collection contract;
e Reduces the potential impacts on public health, safety and amenity associated with waste
containers.
Local Law No 7 (Waste Management) 2018 provides Council with the power to impose the conditions
in this Policy. The Local Law No 7 (Waste Management) 2018 contains additional requirements
relating to waste that should be read in conjunction with this policy.
COUNCIL POLICY
1. Application of the Policy
This Policy applies to all Standard General Waste Containers and Industrial Waste Containers as
