SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 7 AUGUST 2018

Budget Commentary

The Waste Section budget report for the 2018FY shows that revenue was again above estimates
and expenditure was below estimates. There was an annual operating surplus of $3,847,956,
which was $890,539 better than predicted.

Revenue

Revenue was $370,980 above the predicted budget because:
 Infringements were not budgeted and increased revenue by more than $8,000 above
     predicted.
 Temporary service numbers were still being clarified at the time of writing, this has meant a
predicted $15,000 expenditure is not included.
 The sale of goods and services were $259,000 more than predicted. This was mainly due
to an additional $140,000 in disposal fees and an additional $119,000 in the sale of
recycled products (e.g. metals - $108,000, cardboard $4,000). The revenue from the sale
of mulch was less than predicted.
 The additional disposal fees were due to more waste being received than predicted. The
increased revenue in metals sales was due to the price of metals being higher than
expected. The drop in revenue from the sale of mulch was due to the need to reduce price
to move mulch off site. It needed to be moved off site for operational and environmental
     reasons.
 Internal recoveries on Council projects were $98,000 more than predicted. This was due to
waste disposal from projects at Johns Landing, Hilton Terrace and Noosa Main Beach
     (algal bloom).
