1.4 Extent (size) and location of proposed action
The proposed action is located along Pomona – Kin Kin Road over Six Mile Creek, approximately 3 km north
of Pomona, Queensland. The extent of the proposed action is indicated on Figure 1.1.
The proposed action will encompass approximately 3.35 ha and have a perimeter of approximately 2.40 km.
The southern approach to the bridge approximates 490 m in length, the bridge approximates 80 m in length,
and the northern approach approximates 390 m in length, with an overall length of approximately 960 m.
A 10 m constructability buffer was added to the design footprint (refer Figure 1.1) to ensure that “a worst
case scenario” was assessed as part of the impact assessment process (refer Section 2). The impact area
will be reduced where possible during construction.
1.5 Description of the natural values of the area
encompassed by the proposed action
The area encompassed by the proposed action has historically been subject to anthropogenic disturbance.
Historic land management practices associated with agriculture resulted in large areas surrounding the
proposed action being cleared of vegetation. However, in more recent years, natural and anthropogenic
rehabilitation of the area has resulted in consolidation of much of the areas vegetation into a largely intact
vegetation subunit. This area contains a mosaic of Lowland Rainforest, Open Eucalypt forest and Acacia
regrowth. Notwithstanding, areas associated with human dwelling and agriculture have remained largely
cleared of vegetation (refer Figure 1.1).
The proposed action is located within the Mary River catchment and is 12 km downstream of Lake
McDonald. Six Mile Creek, which intersects the proposed action, is defined as a fifth-order waterway
(Strahler, 1964). Six Mile Creek eventually flows into the Mary River.
Climatically, the proposed action is located in a sub-tropical area with warm, humid summers and cool, dry
winters. A review of the closest Bureau of Meteorology station (Tewantin RSL Park (040908)) summarises
the area as having a maximum average temperature range from 24.6°C (July) to 35.5°C (January) and an
average annual rainfall of 1,550 mm.
Further information related to the natural values of the areas associated with the proposed action is provided
in Appendix A.
1.6 Legislative framework
This section provides an overview of the legislation that is applicable to MNES associated with the proposed
action. Included is an outline of the intent of each legislative instrument and its applicability to the proposed
action. The Commonwealth and State-based legislative instruments relevant to the proposed action are
presented in Table 1.1.
