2 Matters of national environmental significance
associated with the proposed action
2.1 Overview of matters of national environmental
significance identified within and adjacent to the
proposed action
Fifty-six (56) MNES have been identified as potentially occurring within a 5 km radius of the proposed action
(i.e. 34 fauna and 22 flora) (refer Appendix A).
Following field-based investigations specifically designed to target potentially occurring MNES and comply
with the relevant survey guidelines (refer Appendix A; Section 2.4.3.2), three MNES were identified as
present within, or immediately adjacent to the proposed action. These MNES consisted of the following:
Lowland Rainforest of Subtropical Australia Threatened Ecological Community (TEC) – Critically
Endangered
Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) – Vulnerable
Rufous fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons) – Migratory.
In addition to the above MNES, habitat for the following MNES was identified within or immediately adjacent
to the proposed action:
Giant barred frog (Mixophyes iteratus) – Vulnerable
Grey-headed flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) – Vulnerable
Mary River cod (Maccullochella mariensis) – Vulnerable
Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) – Vulnerable.
Significant impact assessments for each of the species presented above is provided within Appendix A (refer
Section 6). A summary of the outcomes of the significant impact assessments are provided in Sections 2.2 to
2.4 below.
It is noted that slight variations in the impact areas for each MNES exist between Appendix A and this
document. Appendix A utilised the disturbance footprint of a previous design iteration, whist this document
utilises calculations from the refined disturbance footprint. Therefore, the quantum of impacts identified within
this document are to be accepted as an accurate representation of the proposed action.
2.2 Matters of national environmental significance likely to
be significantly impacted by the proposed action
One MNES has been identified as likely to be subject to significant impacts as a result of the proposed
action. This MNES consists of the following:
Lowland Rainforest of Subtropical Australia Threatened Ecological Community (TEC) – Critically
Endangered.
