3.2 Vegetation Hazard Classes
The following vegetation hazard classes (classified in accordance with QFES (2019)) were identified
within the assessment area which includes a 150m buffer surrounding the site:
      • Vegetation Hazard Class 9.1 – Moist to dry eucalypt open forests on coastal lowland and
           ranges;
      • Vegetation Hazard Class 40.4 – Continuous low grass or tree cover; and
      • Vegetation Hazard Class 41.4 – Discontinuous low grass or tree cover.
The characteristics of each observed vegetation hazard class are described in the following sections
whilst Plan No. BF01 – Vegetation Hazard Classes depicts their distribution across the assessment
area.

3.2.1 Vegetation Hazard Class 9.1 – Moist to dry eucalypt open forests on coastal lowlands
           and ranges
Vegetation Hazard Class 9.1 (VHC 9.1) is located immediately adjoining the site to the north, south
and west. The average canopy height is >30m with crown cover of 60-70%. The vegetation
community is dominated by Eucalyptus pilularis (blackbutt) with Eucalyptus grandis (flooded gum),
Eucalyptus microcorys (tallow wood), Eucalyptus propinqua (small-fruited grey gum), Eucalyptus
siderophloia (grey ironbark), Lophostemon Confertus (brush box), and Syncarpia glomulifera
(Turpentine). Mid-storey species include juvenile canopy species, and Acacia species, with
Allocasuarina littoralis and vine forest species present located flanking drainage lines. The
understorey is open and dominated by grass species such as Imperata cylindrica (bladey grass),
Entolasia stricta (wiry panic) and fern species such as Calochlaena dubia (soft bracken).
VHC 9.1 is attributed a potential surface fuel load of 21 t/ha and a potential total fuel load of 24.2/ha
(QFES, 2019). Plate 5 depicts typical conditions within VHC 9.1.

3.2.2 Vegetation Hazard Class 40.4 – Continuous low grass or tree cover
Vegetation Hazard Class 40.4 (VHC 40.4) is restricted to the vegetated area located within the north-
west of the site and the semi-vegetated allotments to the north. VHC 40.4 is characterised by mature
trees over a mowed grassy understorey. VHC 40.4 is attributed a potential combined surface fuel
load of 4.5t/ha and total fuel load of 5t/ha (QFES, 2019). Plate 6 depicts typical conditions with
VHC 40.4.
