Conclusion
This report sought to determine the value and impact of Tourism on the Noosa community.
Noting all the findings from the various research conducted, it can be concluded that
tourism is Noosa’s most valuable industry sector, and that the surveyed community perceive
substantial benefits from tourism - particularly when compared to the TEQ’s Sunshine Coast
region survey results and/or Queensland residents. Respondents also indicated negative
impacts in a limited number of areas, but the personal impacts of those surveyed were
considered relatively low.
Concluding statements reflecting the findings of tourism based on the research conducted
and the respondents to the surveys are noted below:
• Tourism is Noosa’s number one industry sector and has important flow on impacts
across the Shire:
Tourism provides considerable value added to the Noosa economy, and is the
number one industry sector in Noosa. Over 75 percent of the businesses surveyed
indicated that they would be less profitable without tourism, with 42 percent of
these indicating that, without tourism, they would cease operations.
Tourism creates substantial jobs for the Region (refer Table A), and despite potential
community perceptions, the research conducted did not produce evidence
indicating Noosa’s business precincts suffer from large seasonal employment
fluctuations.
Table A: The economic value of tourism in Noosa 2016/17
Measure Direct Indirect Total
Employment (total) 3,677 2,108 5,785
Employment (FTE) 2,648 1,944 4,592

Value-Added to GRP $262 million $251 million $513 million

and Planning (2019).
There are significant flow on or indirect benefits through industry linkages and
consumption impacts, and Noosa Shire’s rates base is substantially and positively
impacted by tourism – denoted by 42 percent of businesses who indicated they
would not be operating without tourism and 75 percent who would be less
profitable without the tourist trade.
Many businesses surveyed perceived that the existence of tourism allowed for
further investment by public and private sectors. Some businesses surveyed,
however, that believe the benefits are not shared equally.
