• Events in Noosa had a positive impact on the majority of businesses surveyed that
are most likely to be impacted by tourism:
Most businesses surveyed that were likely to be directly impacted by tourism
indicated that events produced positive impacts on their turnover. On average,
these businesses indicated that in an event period, their turnover could increase by
around 25 percent.
As would be expected, surveyed businesses that were likely to be indirectly
impacted by tourism indicated that events had little impact on their turnover.
Only a small proportion of businesses surveyed indicated negative impacts due to
events.
It is worth noting no evidential investigation on the environmental impact of tourism
or events in Noosa was completed for this study. Nonetheless, there were questions
regarding the perception of tourisms contribution to increased pollution, noise and
litter.
• Tourism and events contribute to the social and cultural environment of Noosa in a
significantly positive way:
Based on the responses of those surveyed, the appeal of Noosa and the overall
aesthetics of the natural and built environment produces considerable social
benefits. Nearly 70 percent of residents surveyed in Noosa indicated that they could
not think of anywhere else they wanted to live. This was almost 20 percent higher
than residents surveyed across the Sunshine Coast generally , and double the
proportion surveyed across Queensland (only 37 percent of surveyed Queenslanders
indicated they couldn’t think of anywhere they would want to live but their current
residential address).
Many who were surveyed in the Noosa community recognised that because of
tourism there is an increased number of attractions, entertainment, events and
facilities that benefit locals and visitors alike. There was, however, room for
improvement in Noosa’s night time entertainment opportunities and some
considered ‘value for money’ as generally lacking.
Many residents and businesses surveyed indicated that tourism showcases Noosa
and the region in a positive light – 63 percent of residents indicated that tourism had
a positive impact on Noosa in this regard, compared with 52 percent across the
Sunshine Coast generally, and only 41 percent of Queenslanders. Noosa
respondents acknowledged that as well as assisting the economy, this enhances
Noosa’s reputation regionally, nationally and internationally.
