2. Context for the Study
Noting that tourism can produce a range of benefits and negative impacts, the study was
commissioned to determine a reliable estimate of the economic value of Tourism to the
Noosa economy, as well as the perception of benefits and negative impacts of Tourism from
a wide range of stakeholders across Noosa – residents, businesses and visitors.
Tourism Noosa and Noosa Council acknowledge the importance of tourism for Noosa and its
community, and are highly committed to ensuring that tourism can flourish while minimising
unintentional negative outcomes.
All key policy documents for Tourism Noosa and Noosa Council acknowledge the important
role tourism plays in Noosa’s economy (refer Appendix 1). They also acknowledge the
interconnection between tourism and the social, cultural and environmental elements
within Noosa.
Tourism’s potential Impacts
The study commenced with a literature review of potential benefits and negative impacts
arising in tourism-rich areas. The detailed outcome of the review is provided in Appendix 2
and a summary of findings is shown overleaf. This summary was used as a basis to draw
conclusions associated with the overall value and contribution of tourism to the Noosa
community.
