Re: Dust Deposition Monitoring Adjacent to Top Forestry Road – Proposed Poultry Growing Sheds, Ridgewood
Ref: L16915/BH/12-002
Monitoring was undertaken over three sampling periods, as follows:
Month 1: 11/11/2014 to 09/12/2014 (28 days)
Month 2: 09/12/2014 to 06/01/2015 (28 days)
Month 3: 06/01/2015 to 06/02/2015 (31 days)
The dust deposition guideline applied by the Queensland Department of Environment and
Heritage Protection is 120 mg/m2/day which is taken as equivalent to 3.6 g/m2/month assessed
against the measured Total Insoluble Matter. This is the accepted regulatory indicator for
potential nuisance dust i.e. dust fallout onto parked vehicles, external surfaces such as
furniture.
The ALS Environmental analysis reports for the three sample periods are included as
Attachment 1 to Attachment 3.
The relevant results are summarised in Table 1 below.
Table 1: Summary of Dust Deposition Monitoring Results

B 2.4 Compliant 67% -
A 2.1 Compliant 58% -

The results of the three months of monitoring indicate compliance with the relevant dust
deposition guideline for all samples with the exception of an elevated Total Insoluble Matter
result at monitoring Location B for Month 3. Further analysis of the sample results for
Location B in Month 3 identifies that 4.2 g/m2/month of the Total Insoluble Matter was
Combustible Matter which is not typically associated with particulate emissions from unsealed
roads (i.e. mineral matter). The balance 2.4 g/m2/month was remaining Ash Content which is
consistent with expected particulate emissions from unsealed roads.
Advice from the landholder1 is that a contractor slashed the property containing monitoring
Location B between 6 and 10 January 2015, during the Month 3 monitoring period. Based
upon this advice and the detailed analysis results it is considered that the near-field grass
slashing activity unreasonably compromised the intended road dust deposition monitoring at
Location B during Month 3. A more reasonable assessment of the Top Forestry Road
contribution to dust deposition at Location B during Month 3 is the 2.4 g/m2/month Ash
Content.
