Residential allotments adjoin the eastern site extent, with the Pomona showgrounds located to the south of the site. Predominantly cleared rural grazing properties are located to the north of the site, and a semi-vegetated rural allotment containing the Cooroora Creek riparian corridor is located to the west of the site. The eastern extent of the site contains established fruit tree orchards, with low density mature trees present within the centre of the site. The western site extent is characterised by predominantly mowed pasture with very few trees. The site is zoned as Low Density Residential in the eastern extent and Rural zone in the western extent under the Noosa Plan 2020. Plate 3 depicts the site’s position in the landscape and the extent of existing development. Plate 3 – Site Context (Source: Near Map) 2.2 Topography The slope of the land is a major determinant of fire behaviour, particularly the slope of the land under vegetation that contributes to bushfire hazard. Fire burns faster as it travels up slope, via preheating of unburnt fuels ahead of the fire, increasing the rate of spread and fireline intensity. Conversely, fires move more slowly as they travel downslope. Fireline intensity (kW/m) is a function of the rate of spread (QFES 2019). The western extent of the site is relatively flat, with a gentle west facing slope present in the eastern site extent. The site reaches a topographic high of approximately 100m AHD on the eastern boundary and declines towards the west of the site to a topographic low of approximately 83m AHD. The eastern extent of the site exhibits slopes of approximately 8 degrees. Plate 4 depicts topography conditions within and adjacent to the site. © 2021 5
