SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 6 OCTOBER 2020
Go Noosa Schools Program outcomes include:
Selected schools are actively engaged in the program.
Reduced number of vehicles entering the schools precinct.
Reducing congestion around the school zone.
Increased number of students participating in active transport (e.g. walking and cycling).
School and parents witnessing the increased health and wellbeing benefits of active
transport.
3 School Activity Plans
Initial working group meetings were held with the Deputy Principals and the Environmental Student
Leaders to tailor the Go Noosa Schools Program at the beginning of Term 3. Meetings with the
working groups of each school will occur at the beginning of Term 4, to review the success of
current activities and determine future participation. A detailed list of completed and scheduled
activities for each school are included in Attachment 2 - Schools Activity Plans.
a) Feedback on Term 3 Activities
St Teresa’s Catholic College
o The Deputy Principal was very happy with the in-class presentations and Bike
On bicycle maintenance workshops and is looking forward to continuing the
program.
o Walk and Wheel Wednesdays have commenced but uptake has been slow with
a review of the incentives-based approach is being investigated for Term 4.
However, students have recorded 100 active travel trips to school based on an
honesty system.
o Carpool karaoke was not deemed a success with only one participant.
Noosaville State School
o Walk and Wheel Wednesdays commenced on 9 September 2020 in conjunction
with National Walk Safely to School Day. There was a low turnout at designated
starting points, however, approximately 50 students participated along other
routes. Parents and students are looking forward to Walk and Wheel
Wednesdays returning next term.
o A large proportion of the work with Noosaville State School to date has been the
review of the operation of the school’s kiss and drop. Prior to the review, traffic
was queuing into Beckmans Road blocking traffic and buses and there was
inappropriate parking behaviour. A meeting with external stakeholders was held
to identify the issue. TMR and Buslink were satisfied that improvements to the
functioning of the kiss and drop were the preferred solution. Local Laws and the
Queensland Police commenced monitoring of parking and motorist behaviour,
while Council’s Project Officer worked with the school to educate parents on how
to effectively and safely use the facility. Positive feedback from these activities
includes:
Cars no longer queue past the school roundabout and are clear of the
parking zone within 10 minutes.
Both the Principal and Teachers Aids report positive behaviour change
occurring.
Users have commented that changes ‘have made such a positive
difference to their afternoon’.
