Construction Environmental Management Plan

4 Environmental Management Measures
4.1 Element 1: Acid Sulfate Soils
Rationale

Given the existing ground levels within the site, and the proposed depths of excavation, it is unlikely that acid sulfate soils will be encountered
during the construction process. However, this Acid Sulfate Soils plan has been prepared to ensure that suitable processes are available if such
soils are encountered.
It is proposed that a geotechnical investigation be carried out within the site prior to the commencement of construction to confirm that acid
sulfate soils will not be disturbed during the construction process. This current plan will only come into force if acid sulfate soils are found during
this investigation.
Management measures relating to material stockpiles are addressed under Element 3: Erosion and Sediment Control.
Objective/Target

To minimise and if possible, avoid the exposure of AASS and/or PASS, and to prevent acid leachate from leaving the site and potentially
impacting on adjacent waters.
Performance Indicators

Compliance with the following guidelines and documentation.
 State Planning Policy (SPP) (Queensland Government, 2014)
 Guidelines for Sampling and Analysis of Lowland Acid Sulfate Soils in Queensland (Ahern CR et al., 1998)
 Queensland Acid Sulfate Soil Technical Manual: Soil Management Guidelines (Dear et al., 2002)
 Acid Sulfate Soils Laboratory Methods and Guidelines (Ahern et al., 2004)
 Instructions for the Treatment and Management of Acid Sulfate Soil 2001 (EPA, 2001)
To ensure all water runoff and discharges from the site comply with nominated pH levels of 6.5 – 8.5.
