Management Measures

Tasks Actions / Monitoring Timing Responsibility
Minimise the excavation and Conduct all management measures required under the management to be specified in Prior to and Contractor
exposure of ASS during the works a Site Based Acid Sulfate Soils Management Plan. during
where possible and if exposure is Where excavations occur in medium or high risk areas, any materials excavated or excavation
necessary manage and treat exposed should be tested and if required treated and neutralised. works
accordingly.
Develop an ASS treatment pad to Soil Management Guidelines standards in a suitable
                                      location.
Neutralisation treatment liming rates used must be in accordance with those prescribed
under the Acid Sulfate Soils Management Plan recommendations.
Neutralised material must be reused on-site where possible/feasible.
Conduct verification testing of treated material prior to material re-use as fill or offsite
                                      removal.
The construction works should be sequenced in order to minimise exposure of ASS
where possible. For example no more ASS soils should be exposed than can be
treated in the containment and treatment areas at any given time.
Excavation works of ASS material must be staged in such a way to ensure that the
excavated material is treated as soon as practicably possible and that exposed soil
surfaces are refilled within, and not exposed for longer than, 24-48 hours.
Appropriate management, treatment and disposal of potentially acid contaminated
water runoff and leachate shall be designed and implemented.
Record keeping. Maintain appropriately detailed records of the following: Ongoing Contractor
 Results of any Acid Sulfate Soils testing as required by this Acid Sulfate
                                             Soils Management Plan, including verification testing;
 Location of soil during the treatment process and rates / total quantities of
ameliorant added to the soil requiring neutralisation; and
 Results of surface and ground water monitoring as required by the Acid
                                             Sulfate Soils Management Plan.
Contractor to record all onsite and offsite ASS material movements in a waste tracking
form and provide to Principal at end of project.
Ensure all records and reports are made available to relevant administering authorities
