Page 3 of 10 4. Field Work 4.1 Field Work Methods The field work was undertaken on 3 December 2020 and comprised the drilling of five bores (designated Bores 1 to 5). The bore locations were set out by an experienced geotechnical engineer with reference to site features with the locations recorded using a hand-held GPS device. The approximate bore locations indicated on Drawing 1 in Appendix B. The bores were drilled to 3.0 m depth using a 4WD mounted Jacro 200 drilling rig utilising continuous flight augers fitted with a tungsten carbide (TC) bit. Dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) tests were carried out to assess the relative density of the subsurface conditions. On completion, the bores were observed for groundwater seepage and then backfilled with spoil which was tamped into the holes. The field work was undertaken by experienced geotechnical personnel who logged the bores, and collected samples for visual and tactile assessment and for subsequent laboratory testing. Strata identification was undertaken through observation of cutting returns and recovered samples. 4.2 Field Work Results The subsurface conditions encountered in the bores are given in detail on the borehole logs in Appendix C, together with notes defining the classification methods and descriptive terms used. The depths were measured below existing surface levels at the time of investigation. In summary, the subsurface conditions encountered in the bores comprised sand to the termination of the bores at 3.0 m depth. The relative density of the sand was typically very loose to loose initially, grading medium dense typically within the upper 1 m. No groundwater seepage was encountered in the bores at the time of investigation. It should be noted, however, that groundwater depths and ground moisture conditions are affected by climatic conditions and soil permeability, and will therefore vary with time. 5. Laboratory Testing Selected disturbed samples recovered from the bores were tested in the laboratory for engineering properties of plasticity and particle size distribution for classification purposes. The results of this testing are summarised in Table 1 with material test reports in Appendix D.
