EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Not applicable.

RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Chief Executive Officer to the Services & Organisation Committee
Meeting dated 11 May 2021 and:
A. Note the advice from the CEO that he proposes to retire on 2 February 2022; and
B. Council commence a recruitment process for a new CEO with a view to having a decision on
his replacement by October 2021 to enable a smooth transition to occur.

REPORT
The purpose of this report is to advise Council that the Chief Executive Officer is proposing to
transition to retirement in early 2022. This report sets out details of the proposed transition process
and also includes the rationale for retirement at this time, reflections on his years as CEO and
appreciation for support to the CEO during that time.

1. CEO transition to retirement

Attachment 1 to this report sets out a letter from myself as CEO to the Mayor and Councillors
outlining my intention to transition towards retirement. I intend to retire on 2 February 2022. The
attachment sets out my rationale for retirement at this time, reflections on my period as CEO and a
series of “thank yous” for support during my time as CEO.

In a nutshell:
 I have been privileged to be CEO of this organisation since we de-amalgamated at the
      beginning of 2014.
 It has been an incredible journey and one that I am so fortunate to have been part of.
 By the time my retirement date comes around, I will have been CEO for 8 years and feel that
it is time for someone else to step forward to pick up the mantle. I hope that whoever comes
next has the opportunity to take our Council to even greater heights.
 I have a strong personal conviction that organisational renewal is desirable for the benefit of
the organisation – fresh eyes, fresh ideas and new energy.
 The time is right. There is an ideal window for a new CEO to commence at a Council –
generally in years 2 or 3 of the 4 year Council term. This minimises disruption in the lead up to
the Council election process and also in the year following an election as the new Council goes
      through its induction process.
