RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Acting Infrastructure Planning, Design & Deliver Manager to
the General Committee Meeting dated 14 August 2017 and adopt the Noosa Signage Policy
provided at Attachment 1.
REPORT
1. Introduction
Over many years, Noosa has taken a ‘less is more’ approach to signage for both private
advertising signage and signage in general. It has done this recognising the potential for signage
to create clutter and visual pollution. Taking this approach has created a point of difference for
Noosa.
This policy aims to refocus staff involved in the design and maintenance of signs to bring an
awareness of the importance signage has in setting Noosa apart from other places.
This policy reinforces the Noosa Design Principles and mandates a set of clear Guidelines be
developed that will assist staff with the business of Council sign design and management.
The draft Guidelines are currently under development and will be brought to Council for approval
once finalised.
2. Background
A different approach to signage in Noosa started in 1986 with the adoption of the ‘Noosa Shire
Design Manual’. That document covered a range of topics with signage being recognised as a
potential element that could set Noosa apart from other places by developing a unique style.
In 2002, Council adopted a Corporate Signage Style Manual which aimed “to establish an
integrated, efficient, corporate approach to signage within the Noosa Shire”, however this
document provided only limited criteria and examples for some signage categories. Based on
this, it is considered that a more detailed review is required of Council’s Signage Policy,
Guidelines and Design Criteria.
