The site has been identified as being in a bushfire risk area via town plan mapping. Although the town plan does not contain construction requirements for bushfire prone areas the requirements contained in the Building Code of Australia (BCA) Volume 2 are triggered. Categories of bushfire attack are determined so that the appropriate vegetation separation distances and levels of bushfire construction can be applied to the particular site/ proposed building works. Extreme levels of attack (i.e. greater than those designated as ‘high’) are outside the scope of AS 3959-1999 and, therefore specific design and construction requirements should be provided to meet Performance Requirement P2.3.4 of the BCA Volume 2. For the category of ‘low’ bushfire attack, the degree of bushfire attack is considered insufficient to warrant specific construction requirements. 2.0 Procedure When assessing the site to determine the vegetation separation distances and level of construction required the following AS 3959-199 Section 2 procedure was followed: a) Determine the vegetation separation distance, type and class, as follows: i) Identify all vegetation in each direction from the Site for a distance of 350 metres: ii) Consult Figure 2.1 (AS3959) copy attached to determine the vegetation type which predominates; and iii) Select the Predominant Vegetation Class (A to F) as described in Clause 2.2.2. b) Determine the Separation Distance between the Predominant Vegetation Class and the Site as described in Clause 2.2.3.
