4.0 DEMAND ANALYSIS
4.1 DEMAND DRIVERS

At the time of the 2011 Census, approximately 2.4% (7,679) of all persons counted in the
Sunshine Coast Tourism Region were visitors from elsewhere in Australia, most whom were from
the Brisbane Tourism Region. The Census also identified 6,715 international visitors within the
Region at the time, of which 30% were within the Noosa Shire sub-region.

The International Visitor Survey (IVS) and National Visitor Survey (NVS) are administered by
Tourism Research Australia (TRA). Key data from these surveys estimate the number of
international and domestic overnight visitors as well as domestic day-tripper numbers. FIGURE
4.1 outlines the overnight visitor numbers to the SCTR since 2005 and highlights the attraction of
the Region for domestic tourists and limited international visitation which has only averaged
between 7% and 10% of all overnight stays. Conversely, the NVS indicates that the Sunshine Coast
is a key market for day visitors which averaged some 5.1 million visitors per annum between 2005
and 2015 and included more than 6million visitors in 2015/16.

The Sunshine Coast Airport is to undergo a $350million expansion which will increase the capacity
of the Region to attract additional domestic and international flights and visitation. TABLE 4.2
details the increasing passenger movements through the Sunshine Coast Airport since 2005 and
the addition of international flights and visitors since 2012/13. Completion of the Airport
expansion by 2020 is anticipated to significantly increase overnight visitor numbers to the
Sunshine Coast and the demand for short-term accommodation facilities.
