A bioretention basin inspection and maintenance checklist from the Maintaining Vegetated Assets
Guideline is attached in Appendix 3.
3.1.1.3 Watering
Time of year and the climate will determine the frequency of watering. However, during
establishment, regular watering is essential for plants. Successfully establishing plants is
dependent on the frequency of watering, which in turn is dependent on rainfall, the maturity of the
plant stock and the water-holding capacity of the soil. The following watering program is generally
adequate but should be adjusted to suit site conditions:
• Week 1 – 6 5 visits per week
• Week 7 – 10 3 visits per week
• Week 11 – 12 2 visits per week
In the absence of rain, it is recommended that each plant receives 2.5 – 5.0 litres of water per week
during the first six weeks (40mm of watering per week during establishment).
After the initial four-month period, watering may still be required, particularly during the first
winter or dry period. Watering requirements for healthy vegetation can be determined by ongoing
inspections.
3.1.2 Rainwater Harvesting Tank
3.1.2.1 General
The rainwater harvesting tank will capture runoff from part of the development roof area for reuse
in basement washdown. No connections will be made to internal plumbing and no irrigation system
is proposed on site.
The downpipes to the rainwater harvesting tank will be fitted with first flush devices to minimise
the initial pollutant load runoff from the roof entering the harvesting tank.
