PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 7 MARCH 2023
The Environmental Services Team will annually determine implementation priorities for the Noosa
Nine over the remaining 7 years of the NES and beyond.
Implementation (2023/2024)
Sea turtles (including the Loggerhead turtle) have been prioritised for year one (2023/2024)
implementation of the Road Map. This decision has been made by the Environmental Services
Team considering:
The increased regional occurrences of compromised and dead sea turtle strandings
A recorded decreases in nesting activity on Noosa and Sunshine Coast beaches
The availability of external funding streams
Noosa Council’s current active involvement in Sunshine Coast Council’s Turtle Care
programs
Opportunities present under NC’s Council’s Coastal Hazard Adaption Strategy and the
Eastern Beaches Foreshore Management Plan
Previous Council Consideration
Ordinary Meeting Minutes, 19 May 2022, Item 2, Page 10
That Council note the report by the Fauna Management Project Officer to the Planning &
Environment Committee Meeting dated 10 May 2022 regarding the Draft Fauna Threatened
Species Road Map developed by the Fauna Management Project Officer and note that
A. The Road Map will be subject to an ongoing consultation program prior to finalisation;
B. Deliverables of the Road Map will be subject to future funding requests under Council’s
commitment to ‘significant implementation’ of the Noosa Environment Strategy by 2023.
Finance
Endorsement of the Threatened Fauna Recovery Road Map aligns with significant Commonwealth
and State funding streams for threatened fauna recovery. Council will continue to work with
stakeholders when securing funds to implement management priorities under the Road Map.
Recent examples include:
Community Sustainability Action Grants: Queensland Threatened Species Recovery being
funded by the Department of Environment and Science (DES) - Reducing Light Pollution on
Turtle Populations: An awareness campaign – Noosa Shire Council, Sunshine Coast
Council, Moreton Bay Regional Council and Griffith University.
Environmental Recovery Grants: Biodiversity Conservation Program (funded by DES) -
Demographics of aquatic threatened species in the Mary River catchment – Noosa Council,
Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee and Mary River Catchment Coordinating
Committee
To promote maximum outcomes for minimal investments, a staged implementation of the Road
Map is recommended over the next 7 years (across the remaining term of the Environment
Strategy). Council funding will be required to complement external funding streams. Table 1
provides a breakdown of indicative budget for sea turtles for 2023/24 implement of priority species
recovery actions.
