In such instances, installation of safety barriers will cater for the dynamic deflection of the barrier type. Types of Traffic Safety Barriers that may be used are: ▪ Rigid barriers (temporary concrete / TL2 barriers or temporary corrugated steel beam guardrail) Where temporary barriers and delineation bollards are used for the separation of traffic from road works and hazards, they will be installed to achieve compliance with DTMR specifications and manufacturers specifications. The minimum distance from the face of the TSB to the lane edge will be as per clause 4.13.4 (c) of the MUTCD Part 3. As appropriate, the area immediately behind the temporary safety barrier will be kept clear of materials and hazards. The workforce will be directed to keep clear of this area and a containment fence may be erected, if required. All barriers will be installed so that both the likelihood and extent of deflection of the barrier in the event of impact are minimised. These will be typically used between traffic and a severe hazard such as a deep excavation, bridge pier or a hazardous stockpile and for the protection of workers and non-vehicular road users in vulnerable situations where lateral clearance to moving traffic would otherwise be insufficient for safety. 1.14 Containment Fences other than Road Safety Barriers Containment fences comprising tapes, plastic mesh fencing or longitudinal channelising devices may be used to provide visible containment in situations where physical protection by use of a road safety barrier system is not warranted. In accordance with MRTS02 CL 5.4, where work activities are being undertaken within 3.5m of the lane edge, and where such activities are likely to cause traffic delays, anti gawking screens are to be installed on barriers within 100m of: any intersection, an entry; or an exit ramp. All excavations shall be protected in accordance with Shadforth SWMS and the relevant codes of practise: use of temporary fencing and shade cloth where conditions permit. 1.15 Temporary Lighting Temporary lighting may also be required to supplement existing lighting where the path through the site could be difficult to follow. Lighting from other sources, especially glare sources, should be considered. Lighting for pedestrians shall be provided 1.16 Construction Access Construction access will vary on throughout the project. Specific Vehicle Movement plans and TGS’ will be issued prior to mobilising into an area. 1.17 Detours Not applicable within this project Scope of Works. 1.18 Access Requirements Whilst there are limited numbers of businesses or residential properties, which will require access through or across the work site; any existing access to businesses and residential properties shall always be maintained including out of hours operations. During the work shift, a designated spotter shall be present to direct and spot any accessing vehicles through the work site. If access across worksite is required, suitable control methods shall be employed through utilising spotters, backfilling trenches as works proceed, trenchless technology and IMS-04-05_D - Reviewed May 2019 Document Uncontrolled When Printed Page 8 of 30
