INFRASTRUCTURE & SERVICES COMMITTEE MEETING REPORT 10 NOVEMBER 2015
3. STAFFING
Over 90% of staff at the NAC are employed on a casual basis. During quarter 1 staff numbers
were at their lowest levels for the year. Essential ongoing fixed labour costs associated with
operating the facility such as reception, pool attendants and administration tracked in line with
anticipated levels.
A service review is currently underway and will include assessing the feasibility of creating a
number of permanent key positions; these roles are currently undertaken by casual staff.
4. SYSTEMS, PROCESSES AND OTHER MATTERS
Thursday night swim squads were re-introduced in August to meet demand from the region’s
Surf Lifesaving Clubs. This has proven to be very popular with 20 participants regularly taking
part. This has also alleviated some of the pressure on the availability of water space during the
daytime.
Two indoor circuit classes commenced on 9 July 2015 in the gym, however did not prove to be
popular and were terminated after a 6 week trial period.
A review of the payment structure for the Junior Squad program has been undertaken. As a
result the existing ‘two payment’ system has been replaced by a single payment which is paid at
the NAC reception. This allows for increased control over the payments made by participants,
accuracy in statistics and increases the likelihood of participant retention between the Learn to
Swim and Squad programs.
5. FUTURE DIRECTION
The program pool has two capital works projects scheduled to take place in Quarters 3 and 4 of
2015/16:
The heat pump will be replaced in Quarter 3.
The pool walls and floor require re-grouting and damaged tiles need to be replaced. These
works will occur in Quarter 4.
Developing a comprehensive long-term asset management plan for the facility has been
highlighted as a priority and this will begin to take shape over coming months.
A service review of the NAC is currently underway, and is expected to be completed prior to
Christmas.
The NAC will continue operations during the Christmas and New Year period, closing only for
Christmas Day.
