PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 7 MAY 2019
Risks & Opportunities
The concept of a sustainability institute has significant merit for Noosa and was considered to be
a logical next step for Council given its historical and current focus and commitment on
sustainability, and leadership for its community around sustainable practises for its natural and
built environment.
This first stage investigation identifies that there is an opportunity for Council to coordinate and
collaborate on the range of actions and research initiatives already taking place across the Shire
and region. At this point this seems to be the greatest opportunity for Council.
The potential lack of coordination and shared and open access to the significant amount of
research, solution identification and activity occurring and previously occurred in Noosa could
result in duplication of effort, wasted resources, inefficiencies and lost opportunity to advance the
environmental and sustainability objectives of Council and the community.
Consultation
External Consultation - Community & Stakeholder
Stage 1 did not formally require or involve community or external consultation, consultation was
intended and planned in Stage 2 of the investigation should Council proceed to Stage 2.
However, a small number of external stakeholders were approached to provide initial thoughts on
the concept, these thoughts are included in the Stage 1 report Attachment A.
Further engagement is proposed as part of the intended next steps with key local organisations,
institutes, community members and experts already working or active in advancing or addressing
sustainability.
Internal Consultation
An internal working group was involved and provided input into the Stage 1 report as identified in
the report.
Further engagement and consultation will be crucial in the identification and collation of research
and activity occurring across the Shire and Region.
