6. Long Term Projects and e-Noosa Proposal
In May 2018, an integrated long term transport proposal called ‘e-Noosa’ was developed for the
purpose of seeking funding for long term initiatives. The e-Noosa concept focused on a subset of
the components of the broader Transport Strategy and Vision that could be implemented as an
integrated transport solution.
The e-Noosa proposal would enable a significant change in the way people travel around Noosa
and would represent both an environmentally and economically long-term sustainable solution for
Noosa. The e-Noosa proposal was developed as a sustainable and repeatable model that could
be re-applied to other similar regional tourism destinations around Australia. This may make the
approach more attractive to the Federal Government to fund.
It is important to note that the e-Noosa concept is, as the name suggests, conceptual in nature.
However, it is worth having an aspirational goal that aligns to our long-term vision. The e-Noosa
concept has been developed on the basis of – “What if……”. What if money wasn't an issue?
What if we could imagine our ideal transport solution for Noosa? If that would achieve our long-
term vision as set out in the transport strategy, what would we need do to fund it?
The e-Noosa concept sets out the long-term idealised solution. It clearly can't be funded by
Council alone and will depend on State and Commonwealth funding but it is an excellent starting
point to lobby other levels of government for appropriate funding.
The key elements of the E-Noosa Proposal are:
Provide an example of sustainable tourism to other regional tourism based communities
with a cutting-edge transport system that successfully manages peak holiday traffic, whilst
providing a range of unique travel experiences.
Develop an all-electric ‘Noosa style’ bus fleet in partnership with TransLink and local
operators based out of a satellite depot within Noosa Shire.
Develop an e-Bike share scheme on dedicated bikeways.
Redevelop the existing transit hub at Noosa Heads to incorporate improved traffic flow and
improved facilities, real-time travel advisory signage and access for all patrons.
