Noosa Spit SEMP Final Report 1
Introduction

1 Introduction
The lower Noosa River and river entrance are highly modified and dynamic environments influenced
by the prevailing fluvial and coastal processes. The observed trend of shoreline recession at the
north-facing beach of Noosa Spit, known locally as Dog or ‘Doggie’ Beach, is impacting the social
and recreational values attributed to the area. Importantly, this beach also forms part of an artificially
constructed river training/coastal defence strategy that protects property in Noosa Sound and the
        back of Hastings Street.

Recently, erosion and shoreline recession has resulted in a narrowing of Noosa Spit. Consequently,
there is concern that the river may eventually break through Noosa Spit at Dog Beach, resulting
direct impact to the adjacent urban areas. Key locations referred to in this report are indicated in
        Figure 1-1.

The Noosa Spit Shoreline Erosion Management Plan (SEMP) has been developed to quantify the
combined dynamics of the river entrance and Noosa Main Beach, investigate impacts of various river
mouth alignments, simulate the impacts of a breakthrough event, and propose erosion mitigation
        options for Dog Beach.

        This report describes:

        • The analysis of recent shoreline trends (Chapter 2)

        • Numerical modelling of the existing entrance and alternative entrance configurations (Chapter 3)

        • Multi-Criteria Analysis of shoreline erosion mitigations options (Chapter 4)

        • The preferred risk treatment strategy (Chapter 5)
