RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Waste Coordinator to the Services & Organisation Committee
Meeting dated 10 December 2019 providing an overview of the 2019 Kerbside Bulk Waste
Collection Service and request a further report to Council to examine options for providing the
service into the future.
REPORT
The purpose of this report is to provide Council with an overview of the 2019 Kerbside Bulk
Waste Collection process and outcomes.
1. Provision of the Kerbside Bulk Waste Collection Service
Between 15 July 2019 and 2 September 2019 the Waste Section coordinated a bulky waste
kerbside collection service (the Service) throughout the Noosa Shire. The Service was for private
houses and units only, and did not include commercial premises. Residents were able to put out
a maximum of three cubic metres of bulky waste items per property, or six cubic metres per unit
complex. The duration and method reflected previous services provided since 2015, where
selected suburbs were serviced each week and waste streams were segregated where possible
to capture reusable and recyclable material.
Council’s collection contractor Cleanaway collected steel, E-waste, mattresses (pre-booked at a
cost) and waste material. Resource Recovery Australia, operating out of the Reviva tip shop
retrieved re-usable goods. Large skip bins were placed in various rural locations in an effort to
manage indiscriminate dumping and improve the efficiency of collection in those areas.
2. Material collected (tonnes)
The presentation rate by residents was estimated as being around 1 in 6: meaning that for every
six residents paying for the service in their annual waste charge, one took advantage of it and
placed out bulky waste.
A total of 939 tonnes of waste was collected over the seven week period. General waste
collected saw an increase on last year, however it remains well below the weights collected in the
first year of the Service (post de-amalgamation) and subsequent two years.
