Petition for Replacement of Nuisance Vegetation in Regatta Circuit, Noosaville
While the undersigned wholeheartedly support Noosa Council's laudable policy of
maintaining and improving the natural environment, we believe it is not the Council's
intention that its constituents endure the debilitating consequences of an uncompromising
application of that policy.
The signatories petition Noosa Council for the removal of nuisance vegetation in the near
vicinity of the junction of Regatta Circuit and Starboard Avenue for the reasonable concerns
described below.
The nuisance vegetation - very large melaleuca paperbark trees (leucadendra, or weeping
paperbark, swamp tea tree) - was planted within the ‘Headland Estate’ development more
than twenty years ago and has thrived to a present height of more than 18 metres.
Horticultural publications suggest ‘leucadendra paperbark trees are a spreading tree rising to
heights of 20 to 30 metres with a 10 to 20 metre spread”. (Melaleuca leucadendra Paperbark,
Weeping Paperbark PFAF Plant Database). They can be seen to have achieved those
suggested dimensions on uncleared lands in the shire,
We are uncomfortable with the prospect of these trees in our near vicinity seasoning to such
size, particularly from a safety point of view as the wood of the melaleuca is soft and that the
trees are prone to branch fall events. The danger of which, in a suburban location, logically
must increase with time as the tree grows, ages, and its roots become restricted by the built
environment.
The adjacent concrete footpath has been replaced after the trees’ roots made it unsafe, the
concrete gutter kerb is presently broken as a consequence of the trees’ forces, and the trees’
surface roots constitute a safety trip hazard. Patch repairs have been attempted in recent
times,
Throughout any year, yet particularly more so during mid-Winter and Spring months,
residents living within the vicinity of the melaleuca trees are continuously subject to:
1) hay fever and other allergies
2) dust, leaves and debris from the trees’ soft bark, blown into yards, pools, decks,
screens, and roof gutters
3) road kerb gutters filled with leaves — which inevitably are carried into the Canal and
Noosa River with the next rainfall.
It is significant that within the Headland Estate there are numerous examples in each of
Regatta Circuit, Starboard Avenue, Treasure Cove, Headland Drive, and Shorehaven Drive of
melaleucas having been removed in recent years.
We understand that those actions were in accordance with a long-standing Sunshine Coast
Council, and Noosa Council recognition that the original installation of melaleucas was
inappropriate, and at the request of local ratepayers for the same reasons as we offer as
justification in our petition.
