Water Quality
Shadforth manage water quality to prevent or minimise the impact to the environment surrounding this project.
Construction processes have the potential to cause soil erosion, and sediment and nutrient transportation, which
may impact the surrounding environment.
Water quality is to be managed under the Environment Protection Act (1994), ANZECC 2000 Water Quality
Guidelines for Aquatic Ecosystems and the Environmental Protection (Water) Policy (2009) (previous 1997).
During construction, the release of site water into the surrounding environment may be unavoidable due to
heavy rainfall or ground water seepage. Monitoring must occur to ensure that the water quality parameters listed
in Table 8 are adhered to prior to any release of site water, in addition, there are to be no gross pollutants,
visible films, or detectable odours in the associated waterways. The Sediment Basin Discharge Form IMS-05-
65 is used to record the release of site water. As mentioned in this document, a site specific ESCP will be
developed for the project.
Table 8 – Site Water Release Parameters
Test Release Parameter
pH 6.5 - 8.5
Oil and Grease No visible film or detectable odour
Total suspended soils 50 mg/litre maximum
Iron floc and scum None visible
Floating matter None visible
Electrical Conductivity 800μS/cm
Dissolved Oxygen 6mg/L
Total Iron 0.3mg/L
Total Aluminium 0.2mg/L
Turbidity 50 NTU no greater than 10% of background
If water quality exceeds these levels, and is released into the environment, there is potential for environmental
harm. In this instance an incident investigation takes place, and the regulatory authority may need to be notified.
Erosion and sediment controls, and management of waste, hydrocarbons, plant and machinery are methods
used by Shadforth to maintain compliance with water quality criteria. It is the responsibility of the project
management team to ensure that control measures are in place. To ensure that water quality is maintained,
monitoring must occur at all stages of the project as identified below;
▪ Pre-Construction - Monitor waterways prior to construction to identify baseline parameters.
▪ During Construction – Monitor waterways to ensure no change in water quality.
▪ Post Construction – Monitor waterways to assess if any impact caused by the project.
Water quality data is recorded on the Water Quality Monitoring Form IMS-05-58. Water quality monitoring
records are kept onsite in the project compliance folders.
Erosion & Sediment Control (ESC)
Shadforth have a site-specific Erosion and Sediment Control Plan (ESCP) for this project. The ESCP outlines the
proposed soil and water management requirements for the site during the civil construction process as well as
the stabilisation requirements upon completion. The ESCP details the management and treatment of sediments
washing into the existing drainage systems onsite or the adjacent water courses. It also outlines the erosion risk
presented by the project works. This is managed through the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE)
