           5.0 FAUNA MANAGEMENT– DURING CLEARING
           5.1 GENERAL
Vegetation clearing must be undertaken to ensure that fauna have sufficient time to move from the
clearing area without human intervention. Links between trees are to be maintained to allow wildlife to
move from the area being cleared. Individual trees are not to be cleared if any animals are present in the
tree, or the crown of the tree overlaps another tree in which an animal is present. All vegetation is to be
felled onto the site and is to avoid impacts to offsite vegetation or onsite vegetation which is to be
retained. Any disturbance to adjoining vegetation, including incidental deposition of vegetative waste
material, is to be remedied as soon as possible following completion of clearing works.

           5.2 DIRECTION OF CLEARING
Only one vegetation clearing front is to be undertaken at any time in order to allow fauna to move from
the clearing front into adjacent vegetation. The clearing front should progress from the eastern extent of
the approved clearing area (adjacent to Pottery Street) and progress towards the western extent of the
approved clearing area towards the vegetation to be retained within the covenant area.

           5.3 SEQUENTIAL VEGETATION CLEARING
Vegetation clearing is to be carried out sequentially as follows (as relevant).

               1. The understorey and low shrub layer are to be cleared first utilising a slasher/mulching head
attachment or similar. Any hollow-bearing trees and/or other significant habitat features
identified during the initial site inspection are to be retained and flagged for attention. Plate 3
above provides an indication of identified habitat trees within the site, however this should not
be considered as comprehensive and it is the responsibility of the fauna spotter/catcher to
identify habitat trees at the time of clearing.
               2. Once understorey clearing is completed, non-habitat trees are to be cleared. Clearing of non-
habitat trees will only occur where their removal will not impact on identified habitat trees (e.g.
canopies do not interconnect with habitat trees).
               3. Where required, an elevated work platform or cherry-picker is to be used to allow access to a
chainsaw operator and the fauna spotter/catcher to inspect and remove arboreal habitat as
necessary prior to habitat tree felling. This process is detailed below:

 The fauna spotter/catcher will inspect each potential habitat resource using the cherry-picker.
This is typically undertaken by visually inspecting hollows using a torch. Where large deep hollows
occur, a burrow and bore-scope may be required. The inspection may be required to be
undertaken in the presence of an arborist unless the fauna spotter/catcher has working from
                     heights and chainsaw operation certification.
 If fauna is located within a habitat feature, the tree is either left standing until the animal/s
relocate on their own accord, or the entrance of the hollow will be temporarily plugged to prevent
the wildlife from escaping. Typically, when arboreal fauna become aware of the presence of the
fauna spotter/catcher they attempt to flee due to a perceived threat. If an occupied ringtail
possum drey is encountered, the fauna spotter/catcher should quietly approach (i.e. avoid
