Traffic Engineering Report 11347
MCU: Agricultural Use Poultry Farm
Milligan Farms
August 2013
It is estimated that the remaining avocado trees will still generate some trips on the
external road network. The intent of the avocado trees is to produce a higher quality
fruit where the trees benefit from the waste generated from the poultry farm. The
peak season (dependent on the type of season) for the avocados will be approximately
May through to October. Pickers and packers for the peak season will be sourced
from local backpackers and transported to the site via the backpacker’s mini bus.
Additional 2 staff members will also be on site during the peak season. It is estimated
that two truckloads of fruit will be transported off the site per week. The trucks
delivering the boxes for the fruit will also transport the fruit from the orchard,
minimising the need for further truck trips and creating more efficiency in the
operations of the orchard. Some additional supplies will be required but these will be
incorporated into the general multi- purpose trips for the residential property.
Table 3 – New Avocado Trip Generation (Peak Season)
Movement Description Trips Per Week Average Trips per day
Staff Packing and Picking 10 trips 2 vpd (mini bus)
Staff 10 trips 4 vpd
Supply of Boxes 2 deliveries & 2 1 vpd (truck)
Pick up of Fruit pick-up trips
General Maintenance 2 <1 vpd
Total Average 16 8 vpd
It is estimated that the remaining avocado farm will generate 8 trips per day onto the
external road network. It should be noted that using the poultry farm waste to fertilize
the avocado trees naturally results in significantly less truck trips on the road network.
Poultry farms that do not have the opportunity to use waste within the site can
generate up to 5 additional truck (truck and dog) movements per day during peak
activities.
4.2 Proposed Poultry Trip Generation
The development consists of a poultry farm, providing 8 sheds and feeding chicks
over one 7 week cycle. There will 5.5 cycles per year. Information from the
Redlands Bay Poultry Farm has been used to determine the frequency of vehicles
servicing the site over the 7 week period. The table below estimates trips based on an
average trip generation from the site over a 7 week cycle for all 8 sheds. Please note
that all waste generated from the poultry farm will be used on site on the avocado
trees and therefore no truck trips are generated for the removal of waste.
Table 4 – Poultry Trip Generation
Week Type of Load Loads Trips per Trips per

Prior to Start Starter Grain 4 8 1
Batch Start Chicks Arrive 3 6 1
Week 1 Grain 2 4 0.5
Week 2 Grain 3 6 1
