Conservation (Koala) Conservation Plan 2006 and Management Program 2006 – 2016):
the proposed works take advantage of disturbed areas of the site which provide low habitat values;
the nominated disturbance areas do not include undisturbed areas of the site which offer suitable resources
for Koalas;
the proposed disturbance areas involve clearance to areas adjoining the existing quarry pit and will not result
in fragmentation or isolation of vegetated corridors and linkages on and off-site;
no permanent structures are proposed, and threats to Koalas such as a long term increase in traffic,
residential population, dogs etc will not result;
no new roads are required to be created;
the increase in traffic along Lake Macdonald Drive relating to transport of materials from West Ridge to the
other quarries will be temporary in nature (works to take approximately 24 months), and will occur only over
a short distance (i.e. 1.2km); and
the overall proposed works will enable rehabilitation and vegetation enhancement using native species to
other disturbed quarries nearby.
It would be appropriate for SCRC to condition the following requirements as part of an MCU approval. These
requirements would be incorporated into a CEMP if necessary.
Sequential and directional felling must be employed during vegetation clearance to lesson potential harm to
Koalas and other wildlife.
A spotter-catcher must be employed for the clearance works.
Dogs must not be permitted on site as part of the construction works.
Probable Solution S6.1 and 7.1 therefore applies and the proposed works would achieve Specific Outcomes 06
and 07.
