Site Based Management Plan
3.8.4 Implementation Strategy/Mitigation Measures
Once site rehabilitation commences a Site Rehabilitation Plan and Monitoring Program shall be prepared in accordance
with the following implementation strategies:
Land Use
The Site has been historically used for mining purposes. The sequential land use will be compatible with the planning
scheme and the surrounding land use (e.g. grazing).
Landform
The practicalities and economics and the constraints imposed by environmental and amenity values shall determine
the final landform.
The landform shall comprise of gently sloping free draining batters with the quarry void and site water storages
converted into water reservoirs or similar feature as an alternative high value use.
Residual void pit batter slopes will vary from 520 to 200 depending on the geotechnical properties of the substrate.
Topsoil plus any overburden and remaining extracted material on-site will be used as part of the rehabilitation of the
final landform.
The following measures shall ensure that the landform created by extraction activities is stable and is married into the
surrounding landscape:
- using earthmoving equipment to progressively shape and trim the workings to the design profiles;
- flattening the gradients of selective batters, to a stable angle of repose, on reaching the terminal limits of
extraction, see Figure 10 – Batter Treatments;
- rounding or marrying the contours into the natural ground surface;
- topsoiling and grassing of contours; and
- designing landform and drainage to control erosion for the particular hydrological regime.
Erosion and Drainage Control
Drainage, erosion and sediment controls will be implemented prior to land disturbance, including establishment of any
infrastructure, vegetation clearing and extractive operations, where practical.
Overland water flow from disturbed areas will be directed to the extraction pit during extraction operations, where
appropriate, while “run on” waters shall be diverted away from workings using perimeter bund or diversion drain.
Erosion control is an integral component of establishing vegetation cover (i.e. pasture grasses), landforming and
drainage and may include measures such as gravel and organic mulching.
Details of stormwater management are presented in Section 3.1 of this SBMP.
Control of Vehicle/Extraction Movements
Employees and contractors shall be made aware of restricted areas through Site inductions.
Wire fencing or flagging barricades shall be installed around areas under rehabilitation to ensure demarcation.
Use existing temporary internal access roads where possible.
