CSR West Ridge Quarry Ecological Assessment Report 2 Proposed Works 2.1 CSR’s Mining Operations CSR is the holder of 11 mining leases in the former Noosa local government area. Clay/shale materials are mined from these tenements as raw feed for clay brick and paver production and are referred to as the 'Cooroy Project'. The Cooroy Project operates under Environmental Authority (EA) No. MIC200390705 and in accordance with CSRs PoO which has been in place for the period between 2007 to 2012 and will be renewed for the upcoming period of 2012 to 2017. The clay/shale materials mined from the tenements were previously used for the production of clay bricks and pavers at CSR's manufacturing facility at Cooroy. This manufacturing facility has now ceased operation. The materials are now transported to CSR's operations in Brisbane. The mining activities at a number of the tenements are reaching the end of operations and steps are being undertaken by CSR to prepare for the next phase of Rehabilitation of those tenements. Priority sites for rehabilitation works includes Neales Quarry (Mining Lease 3718 & 50078) and White Pit Quarry (Mining Lease 3672, 3673, 3705, 3729 and 50123), located approximately 1.2km south of West Ridge Quarry on Lake Macdonald Drive. It is proposed to utilise material from the West Ridge Quarry (Mining Lease 3742) to provide fill material for the rehabilitation of Neales Quarry and White Pit Quarry. 2.2 Works Methodology and Rehabilitation West Ridge Quarry is located on Lot 3 SP108094, which is accessed through Lot 2 SP108094. Both Lots 2 and 3 are owned by CSR. Vehicle access for the proposed extraction works will be via the existing driveway in Lot 2 and along an existing track which connects to the existing quarry pit in Lot 3. There are two areas proposed to be used for the extraction works, both adjoin the existing, exposed quarry pit (refer Figures 1 and 2). The total area affected by the proposed extraction works is 2.66ha. It is anticipated that the volume of material required can be obtained and hauled over a period of 24 months from commencement of the operations. It is anticipated that 900,000t of material will be required to complete the rehabilitation works at Neales Quarry and White Pit Quarry. Extractive operations will generally comprise: > vegetation clearing (as necessary); > topsoil and overburden stripping (as necessary); > material extraction (dozer, excavator, front end load or similar earthmoving equipment); > material stockpiling on the floor of the extraction area; and > haulage from West Ridge Quarry via Lake Macdonald Drive to Neales Quarry and White Pit Quarry. All extraction activities will be undertaken in a manner consistent with the existing mining lease approvals over the land. For example, Condition 6 and 7 of the EA No. MIC200390705 detail that: > diversion bunds must be established above the pit to divert clean stormwater runoff around the disturbed area; and > collection bunds within the downstream point of the quarry floor to collect and direct stormwater runoff within the disturbed area to a series of treatment areas prior to release. It is anticipated that DERM will identify the standard for that release water in the DERMs conditions on the ERA 16. The proposed works serve the dual purpose of also enabling the reshaping of West Ridge Quarry pit and the formation of gently sloping ground levels reflective of surrounding areas. Current contours were used to determine which areas surrounding the quarry pit required reshaping to form a gentle slope. The final ground level of the pit will vary subject to the total amount of material extracted. Reshaping the land at West Ridge will enable overland flow to drain across the site in a more natural manner rather than pooling in the quarry pit. Rehabilitation works will be required prior to the surrender of the mining lease over West Ridge Quarry. The extent and nature of the rehabilitation works will be determined at that time with consideration to the likely CSR Building Products Ltd Version 3 4 December 2012 Ecological Assessment Report V3.docx Commercial in Confidence Page 2
