General Lighting Requirements
Australian Standard AS1158.3.1
This Australian Standard 1158 and part 3.1 deals direct with the hardstand areas surrounding the site buildings. It is
defined as “Parking spaces, aisles and circulation roads’’. This definition also requires further refinement based on the
level of night time activity and risk of crime. For the purpose of this site we have selected the highest level of night time
activity which results in a subcategory of P11a.
It is also worth mentioning that this level can be changed to a lower category if the expected amount of activity is reduced.
We have taken advantage of this to allow for the reduction in lighting levels to the overflow car park area only during
Curfewed hours of operation e.g. after 11pm. This area would generally not be in use during late night hours and the
ability to dim luminaires on the northern perimeter will allows us to comply with Curfewed hours spill lighting requirements.
Australia Standard AS4282
This standard is our guide to spill lighting requirements and sets out where and how spill light is to be measured and its
acceptable levels. These acceptable levels are found after investigation of site uses and surrounding properties. It also
lays out acceptable levels of spill based on time before or after 11pm. (pre and curfewed hours)
As this is a industrial site and is surround by industrial zoning we evaluate spill base on this subcategory. These
acceptable limits are further reduced after 11pm.
Spill measures before 11pm are evaluated at all neighbouring property boundaries and will ensure both lighting level and
intensity is compliant. After 11pm the acceptable level reduce considerably but the point of measurement also move inside
the neighbouring properties to their minimum building offsets set by local council (if the site is vacant), in this case 10m.
Apart from impact to neighbouring properties we must also insure no adverse effect to road users on the surrounding
transport systems. This is measured by a system called Threshold increment. This system evaluates the intensity of
lighting on this project to road users.
Fuel Retailers
Major fuel retailers also set out lighting levels required to ensure safety and effective retail management of their sites. We
have ensured no matter if this site is run by an independent or leased to a major retailer, lighting levels will be sufficient.
The highest levels requested by fuel retailers are 400 lux maintained under fuelling canopy with a vertical level on pump
face of 150 lux. The attached design demonstrates compliance with these requirements.
