SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 12 JUNE 2018

Proposed Relocation
NHSLSC has advised Council and the community it is considering its options and future at
Peregian Beach. The Club presented to Council staff and Councillors in May and June 2017
respectively, outlining a concept to relocate the clubhouse to new larger premises with views of
the ocean. The club initially stated views of the ocean were needed to make the supporters club
financially viable but subsequently advised it is needed for safety for surveillance of the beach
and better access. Most recently, the club stated a preference to relocate the clubhouse to the
skate park location, roughly 40m to the north and 25m east toward the frontal dune.
Council staff have written to the club in May, July and September 2017 and May 2018 providing
advice on the processes and constraints associated with relocation and redevelopment. The
primary issues are:
Coastal Hazards
A reduction of the buffer area between the clubhouse and the ocean would be likely to:
 Impact on the area’s resilience to coastal erosion hazards and alter natural cycles of dunal
      erosion and accretion; and
 Increase coastal hazard risks to both the new facility and the community, with the potential
for significant future costs to reactively manage those risks, which is a scenario already
occurring for a number of surf clubs in Australia.
Council’s has commenced its Climate Change Adaptation Plan project in partnership with the
Department of Environment & Heritage Protection under its QCoast 2100 initiative to prepare for
the potential future impacts of climate change. Central to this project is a Coastal Hazards
Adaptation Plan for which Council has developed new coastal hazard mapping. Erosion prone
area mapping for the Peregian Park reserve area is shown below.
