SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 12 JUNE 2018
commit its own personnel and financial resources in the initial years of a new operation. As
property owner, Council would also require a high level of surety any new surf lifesaving club has
the resources to sustain operations, beach safety and maintenance of the clubhouse building.
Recent Community Forum
The Peregian Beach Community Association recently organised a community forum on 19 May
2018 seeking to inform residents of the issues associated with the club. Panel members
comprised:
Peregian Family and Friends Association - proponents for NHSLSC;
Peregian Beach Surf Club - a non-affiliated incorporated group seeking to establish a
community run surf club model in the existing building; and
Noosa Council environment, planning and property staff.
SLSQ did not attend but provided the letter in Attachment 1 expressing support for NHSLSC in
its endeavours to grow and further develop Surf Life Saving activities based out of the Peregian
Beach site.
It was apparent there is still significant confusion and division in the local community, relating to
which organisation is best placed to run the service and the feasibility of the proposed relocation.
Conclusion
The Peregian Beach community is relatively small and, undoubtedly, most residents support a
reinvigorated and sustainable local surf club. Friction can be an important part of robust
community debate but Council staff are of the view unnecessary division has been created and
issues now need to be resolved in the community interest. All parties should be encouraged to
harness the significant common ground and goodwill across the community in focussing on
available options at the existing site.
NHSLSC assumed local operations in 2014 but Council is still yet to receive any formal approach
or application from NHSLSC detailing a proposal for the future of lifesaving services at Peregian
Beach or any redevelopment. In the meantime, staff have again contacted NHSLSC and its
proponents recently clarifying the issues raised in this report.
