RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Director Community Services to the Services & Organisation
Committee Meeting dated 12 June 2018 providing an update on the purchase of Johns Landing
and the work of the Community Partnership Roundtable.
REPORT
Purpose
The purpose of this report is to provide an update on the purchase of Johns Landing, the works
undertaken at Johns Landing since the purchase and the work of the Community Partnership
Roundtable.
Background
The number of people living in substandard conditions at Johns Landing was identified by the
Social Strategy Working Group who assisted Council to develop the Noosa Social Strategy in
2015 as one of the most significant social issues in the Shire.
The Working Group was concerned that the elderly owners of Johns Landing camping ground
were finding it increasingly difficult to viably operate the camping ground and that the welfare of
the over 90, long-term residents, including families with children, was at risk.
In discussing how to deal with this complex issue the Working Group recommended a
partnership approach between Council, State Government agencies and local not for profit
groups. This in turn led to a key recommendation of the Noosa Social Strategy that Council
organise and facilitate a Community Partnership Roundtable to systematically identify and
address key local social issues.
Negotiations with the Johns Family re: purchase of the property
During 2016, the Director of Community Services undertook research into the Johns Landing site
that established that the property had a development approval as a campground; over 440
metres of river frontage; and between 50%-70% of the site comprised endangered and of
concern vegetation.
A valuation of the land was undertaken by Bugler Francis Valuers in November 2016.
