REPORT
The purpose of this report is to consider options for the Floating Land event in 2017 and
recommend an achievable option which meets community expectations and maintains the
reputation of the event.
1. Background
Floating Land is a site-specific arts festival occurring every two years featuring an outdoor
sculptural exhibition in the Noosa environment accompanied by themed public programming.
Floating Land was established in 2001 by former Noosa Regional Gallery Director, Kevin Wilson,
to explore the concept of art in the environment. It was the first environmental arts event of its
kind in Australia and has progressively developed to become internationally recognised and an
iconic event in the Noosa calendar.
Since inception, Council has coordinated the festival which has involved international, national
and local artists, communities, volunteers, arts organisations and the business sector. Over time
the scale and format of Floating Land has changed considerably. It has been produced at various
times of the year and has occurred in various locations including Boreen Point, Lake Cootharaba,
Noosa River, Noosa Woods, Kin Kin, Cooroy and Coolum Beach. The one element that has not
changed is its environmental focus.
2. Purpose
Floating Land is now one of the signature cultural events in the Noosa region. It is highly valued
by artists, visitors, academics, local businesses and the community for its inspiring artworks,
natural settings, collaborative engagement in the creative process, engaging programming,
informative discussion around topical environmental issues and lasting iconic images.
