4.2 Topography
As illustrated in Text Figure 6 overleaf, the site is located on the easterly facing flank of an ancient sand
dune which crests about 120 m to the north-west. During the site walk-over, topographic features
specific to the site were noted, and ground slopes were recorded using a hand-held clinometer.
The natural surface profile had been interrupted by historic landscaping and residential construction;
with inferred less altered ground slopes along the alleyway bordering the southern site boundary from
Elanda Street to Henderson Street. Much of the eastern part of the site appeared to be uninterrupted by
historic landscaping. The inferred natural slopes in the area measured at the time of our assessment
ranged from about 3° to the west, up to about 15° to the east. Based on our observations it appeared
that cut and fill earthworks had been undertaken across the site, resulting in a generally flat building
platform and a terraced lawn and garden areas supported by various retaining walls, as discussed in
above in Section 4.1.
