4.1 Ocean Life Saving Association Inc. (OLSA)
Proposal Summary
OLSA is a recently incorporated community group focussed on environmental initiatives. It has
launched a new website at https://oceanlifesaving.com.au/. Its EOI submission articulates an
activation plan to establish a new Ocean Life Saving Station focused on:
Affiliates programs;
Citizen science; and
Student education.
The following extracts from OLSA’s summary document outlines its proposal:
Working with, and supporting the traditional model of lifesaving and nippers, Ocean Life Saving is
a community grassroots collaboration of marine science, data collection, education, conservation
and citizen science. …
Supporting and enriching local lifesaving and nippers, Ocean Life Saving will bring together
world-leading researchers on humpback whales, passionate Sunshine Coast turtle carers,
leading bush, beach and dune care volunteers and other committed community groups with one
common goal; to bring the community with them to the front line of tackling our climate crisis.
Our partners:
Cetacean Ecology & Acoustic Laboratory (CEAL), School of Veterinary Science, University of
Queensland;
Surfrider Foundation, Sunshine Coast;
Coolum & North Shore Coast Care. Coast environment and turtle care;
Peregian Beach Community Association Bushcare & Marcus Beach Bushcare Association –
volunteers; and
Coastal marine mapping expert Dr Javier Leon, University of Sunshine Coast.
OLSA embraces surf lifesaving as an integral part of the history, culture and local experience of
Peregian Beach. OLSA is unequivocal in its support for surf life saving to continue from the
Peregian Beach surf club building.
We strongly support the community’s desire for a viable nippers program to be part of the surf life
saving experience. The programs, activities and education that will be on offer by OLSA will
enrich the traditional nippers’ program by providing additional experiences with a strong focus on
the coastal and ocean environment.
