PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING 9 MAY 2023
Chapter 3 Part C expands on the Norther Sub-region, which is made up of the Sunshine Coast and
Noosa LGAs. Perhaps understandably it is heavily weighted on the Sunshine Coast given it has the
larger area and population and expects the greatest change over the life of the Plan.
The following are extracts from the Outcomes for Live : Our great places:
Developing and promoting great places will support the sub-region’s liveability, prosperity, and
sense of identity and community. Current and evolving great places identified by local
governments in the Northern sub-region include:
a. Hastings Street Noosa Heads, an iconic destination, is a small-scale main street set among
the green backdrop of Noosa Hill that provides a major drawcard for locals and international
visitors. These qualities – a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly streetscape and diverse dining and
retailing opportunities – all make Hastings Street an outstanding place.
…
h. Cooroy and its surrounding area services much of the Noosa hinterland. Residents enjoy
modern lifestyle conveniences in a country town atmosphere. The streetscape is enhanced by
heritage buildings, mature landscaping, shaded footpaths, small/intimate business premises,
and visual connections with the sub-region’s agricultural and forestry heritage.
The State’s SEQRP review team has specifically asked Local Governments to review the list of great
places and to consider what implementation action and measures could better support the Live
policy. The State has advised that any additional places should meet the criteria described in this
report.
While so many places within Noosa Shire are really special and worthy of recognition, officers have
proposed the following list of additional nominations having consideration to elements such as :
• Attractive built form and amenity
• Connection between built and natural setting
• Vibrancy and popularity
• 2021 liveability index scores
• Potential growth and redevelopment opportunities
• Pressure points and transitions
The following places are proposed for inclusion:
Gympie Terrace, Noosaville— Adjoining over 1700m of public parkland along the Noosa River,
Gympie Terrace is a favourite place for locals and holiday makers for many different reasons.
Immediate proximity to the river and its ample opportunities for active and passive outdoor recreation
is the principal drawcard, particularly for families and busy pathways afford great views. A wide
choice of restaurants and cafes attract patrons from early morning to evening with outdoor dining
and opportunities to picnic in the park. Retail offerings are of niche, boutique scale with residents
and visitors exploring by foot.
Noosa Junction— The traditional business centre of the Shire has emerged into a vibrant centre for
retail, dining and entertainment. With ongoing investment in commercial offices it also
accommodates many creative and health and wellbeing businesses, and destination shops and
galleries. Day time cafes and night time restaurants are complemented by cinemas and live
entertainment including touring artists at The J Entertainment venue. Night markets and street art
add to the appeal of the contemporary coastal village atmosphere.
Peregian Beach Village— Once an unimposing quiet, laid back beachside community, Peregian
Beach village now supports a rapidly growing catchment, including more than 11,000 people living
in nearby modern communities of Peregian Springs and Peregian Breeze, just outside Noosa Shire.
The beach as well as entertainment and recreation opportunities in the parkland are part of the
