Brood stock will be fed a varying diet consisting of cow’s liver,
trawler trash and live crustaceans on a regular basis. This diet will ensure
the fish have access to the calcium required for strong egg development.
3. EGG AND FINGERLING MANAGEMENT
3.1. Egg Collection
Inspection diving for eggs will commence when pond water temperatures
reach 160C. This will be carried out at four day intervals to prevent the
missing of a spawning. Regular afternoon pond inspections will also be
carried out to monitor fish activity around breeding time.
When eggs are detected the liner is removed from the pipe and another
fresh liner placed in the pipe for the likelihood of another spawning. Due
to the short distance of travel to the hatchery building the liner/eggs will
be submersed in a trough of pond water and transported back to the
hatchery.
3.2. Handling Treatments
The eggs will be bathed in a solution of 1ppt formalin for 30 minutes to
reduce fungal infestations. This fonnalin bath is carried out daily until all
eggs are hatched. After the initial bath the flyscreen is removed from the
liner and cut into more manageable sized sheets. These sheets allow the
fly screen to hang off the bottom of the rearing trough, thus preventing
the fingerlings from burying into the dead and fungus covered eggs for
protection.
3.3. Trough Placement
Each individual spawning will be placed in its own trough and recorded
in a "Trough Placement" register. As the requirement for space is needed
as the fingerlings grow they will be moved to other individual troughs or
placed in prepared production ponds.
3.4. Fingerling Feeding
Fry will be initially fed artemia for the first few feeds along with live
plankton produced from the plankton ponds. Excess plankton will also be
frozen in zip lock bags and fed at a later date. Frozen blood worms will
also be sourced as a food item.
