EMP – CONSTRUCTION PHASE 4-14
Strategy: To ensure that erosion and sedimentation is adequately controlled during the
construction phase.
• Stormwater is treated as close as possible to the source (as opposed to at the lower areas of
the catchment);
• Clean stormwater is to be diverted around construction areas of the site including any waste
or chemical storage areas, stockpiles and toilets;
• All surface runoff shall be directed through temporary control measures to minimise
potential for sediment transport off-site;
• Any sediment control measures are to avoid significant trees and retained vegetation;
• Any catch drains flows are directed through temporary control measures and toward
sedimentation ponds;
• Any catch drains will be protected from scour by check dams or similar devices aimed at
reducing water velocities;
• Installation of controls on the upstream and downstream side of any stockpiles or fill
embankments;
• Removal and appropriate disposal of deposited material, litter and gross pollutants;
• Inspections of erosion and deposition is to be conducted on a weekly basis and following
storm events that have the potential to cause erosion i.e. normally events with a rainfall
intensity greater than 25mm/hr or daily events with totals greater than 50mm.
• Erosion and sediment control measures will be implemented in areas prior to
commencement of any construction activities. This includes:
a. Designating areas for machinery and construction material storage (as required) away
from drainage paths;
b. Such storage areas are to be suitably bunded and lined to prevent seepage of
contaminants into the sand substrate (see C.15);
• Education of site personnel through the Induction/Environmental Awareness training;
• Construction of sedimentation detention areas as required;
• Installation of vehicle washdown facility at site access points to minimise potential for
transport of sediment off site; and
• No sediment and erosion control devices and water quality control measures are to be
located within habitat protection areas (refer approved E&SC drawing provided by
Superintendent).
• The use of mulch for erosion control is described in the Landscape Master Plan including
the use of Hoop Pine bark for slopes greater than 1:3.
Performance Requirement:
• To ensure measures taken to reduce risk of erosion are in accordance with best practice
guidelines (I E Aust 1996), minimise the generation of sediments and prevent off-site
transport of sediments during construction.
