Earthwork procedures should be carried out in a responsible manner in accordance with
AS 3798-2007 'Guidelines on Earthworks for Commercial and Residential Developments'.

For the conditions encountered on site, the following is recommended:-

 Treatment of existing fill and loose natural sandy soils to create a controlled fill platform
i.e. compaction of existing fill insitu where possible along with partial or complete
           removal as required.
 Placement of imported fill in a controlled manner.
 Provided existing fill is adequately treated and imported fill is of low plasticity and
placed/compacted under controlled conditions and is appropriately certified by a
Registered Engineer, a conventional high level foundation system could be adopted.

It is recommended that the earthworks contractors make themselves familiar with site
conditions.

           6.2.2 Trafficability

At the time of the field investigation, trafficing problems were not encountered over the current
developed site.

However, following demolition and clearing some trafficking problems could arise for earthworks
and construction machinery from:-

 Weakening of the upper level soils during and after periods of rainfall and repetitive
           traffic.
 Disturbance of the upper level soil fabric with removal of underground elements, e.g.
services, footings and ground covers, e.g. slabs, pavements, vegetation, etc.
It is recommended that after demolition, clearing, etc., the exposed surface in the construction
area be proof rolled (where appropriate) to assist in identifying weak areas and to improve
trafficability for light weight construction vehicles. Soil Surveys Engineering can assist in
identifying weak areas and the provision of remedial/treatment measures to improve
trafficability.

An important aspect of maintaining trafficability is seepage/drainage control, along with
construction practices appropriate for site conditions. It should be ensured that runoff is diverted
away from the construction area to prevent ponding of water

Allocation and/or construction of dedicated haulage tracks and working platforms, incorporating
appropriate subgrade bridging, may be required to control site traffic, depending on climatic and
site conditions prior to and during construction works.

Operation of construction plant near batters, trenches, pits, etc. must be carefully controlled.
Appropriate set-back distances for large plant (e.g. piling rigs) will need to be established - this
matter should be referred to the piling contractor.

The contractors should fully inform themselves of the ground conditions, on site, prior to
commencement of earthworks. This requirement should be explicit in any earthworks
specifications or contract.

                                                                                                            SOIL SURVEYS
