6.0 GEOTECHNICAL ASSESSMENT

    6.1 General
This section of the report includes evaluation of the following:-

 Civil Works, including Trafficability & Earthworks
      Foundations
      Retaining Walls
      Pavements
      Site Management

The presence of the weak (loose) soils and high water table will impact on the proposed
foundation system, pavements and earthworks operations and must be considered in the
design and construction phases of the redevelopment.

Demolition and Clearing Activities

Extreme care should be exercised during the demolition/clearing phase to ensure that
excessive subgrade disturbance is not caused during removal of existing structures,
pavements, vegetation, services, etc.

Working Platforms For Tracked Plant and Heavy Construction Vehicles

The scope of Soil Surveys Engineering’s study DOES NOT include the design of a working
platform for heavy construction vehicles or heavy tracked plant.

Detailed design of a working platform should be carried out considering the operation of actual
machinery proposed to be used. This is particularly important when considering the use of
heavy piling rigs and heavy cranes - the piling/crane contractor should be consulted regarding
their requirements.

    6.2 Civil Works

           6.2.1 General

It is understood that following demolition and clearing works the proposed bulk earthworks will
consist of minor (<0.5m depth/height) cut and fills to construct a building platform. Detailed
excavations for footings, services, pits, tanks, etc could be expected to be to depth, with
excavations for the underground fuel tanks and associated services taken to depths of the order
of 4.5m. Deeper excavations may be required for removal of contaminated soils, if present.

Note: The upper level sandy soils, in particular the very loose to loose material, will
cause problems with trafficability/workability should this material be or become wet prior
to or during construction. In general, the sandy soils have been described as silty sand
with some sand. Geotechnical experience on sites with similar profiles, that with similar
sandy soils that contain a significant amount of silt fines, the “re wetting” of the soil to
optimum may be difficult to achieve. The option of full removal of the weak material
prior to filling may need to be considered and should be assessed at the time of
construction.
