4 C D Developments Environmental Traffic and Rail Noise Level Impact Assessment for Proposed Residential Unit Development, 54 Elm Street and 5 Pearl Street, Cooroy Page 20 of 35 rooms and the ground floor traffic noise could be controlled by an acoustic barrier, as detailed above. The materials of construction for the upper floor would need to achieve the requirements of MP4.4. To comply with the habitable room noise criteria of MP4.4 all external openings would need to be closed and, therefore, all upper floor level habitable rooms which require upgraded materials of construction for traffic noise control must be mechanically ventilated and/or air-conditioned. This air- conditioning/mechanical ventilation system must be designed and installed such that it maintains the internal noise and, furthermore, complies with the ventilation requirements of the Building Code of Australia. Traffic Noise Control for Habitable Rooms In accordance with MP4.4 a facade corrected ultimate traffic noise level of ≤ 57 dB(A) LA10,18H means standard materials of construction, whereas any facade corrected traffic noise level in excess of 57 dB(A) requires upgraded materials of construction to control traffic noise levels to the habitable rooms. The following Table details the facade corrected traffic noise levels and the corresponding Noise Category. Level of transport noise (LA10,18H) for State controlled Single event maximum noise Noise Category roads and designated local (LAmax) for railway land government roads Category 4 ≥ 73 dB(A) ≥ 85 dB(A) Category 3 68 – 72 dB(A) 80 – 84 dB(A) Category 2 63 – 67 dB(A) 75 – 79 dB(A) Category 1 58 – 62 dB(A) 70 – 74 dB(A) Category 0 ≤ 57 dB(A) ≤ 69 dB(A) For the different Noise Categories the required minimum transport noise reduction required for habitable rooms is as follows: Category 4: 40 dB(A); Category 3: 35 dB(A); Category 2: 30 dB(A); Category 1: 25 dB(A); Category 0: No additional acoustic treatment required – standard building assessment provisions apply. With the acoustic barriers detailed in Figure 7 in place the ultimate facade corrected traffic noise level has been calculated to each of the facades and the traffic Noise Category determined. Refer Noise Control section of this report for details of the Noise Category for each facade to adequately control traffic noise levels to all of the habitable rooms.
